The General Skilled Migration program includes visas such as Skilled Independent, State Sponsorship, and Skilled Graduate visas, tailored to meet the demand for in-demand skills in Australia.

189 Visa – Skilled Independent (Permanent Visa)

This visa is by invitation only and is intended for skilled workers and New Zealand citizens with in-demand skills to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. It has two streams:

  • Points-tested Stream

    For applicants with occupations on the Skilled Occupations List, invited by the government via SkillSelect. A minimum of 65 points is required, though some occupations may need a higher score.

  • New Zealand Stream

    Eligible New Zealand citizens who have lived in Australia for five years (since before February 19, 2016) and meet the residence requirement may qualify. Contact us for a visa eligibility assessment.

190 Visa – Skilled Nominated (Permanent Visa)

This visa is also by invitation only and is for skilled workers with in-demand skills in a specific state or territory, allowing them to live and work permanently where invited. Like the 189 visa, candidates must submit an Expression of Interest via the SkillSelect immigration system and score a minimum of 65 points (some occupations may require more).

485 Visa – Skilled Graduate (Temporary Visa)

The 485 visa allows international students to live, study, and work in Australia after completing their studies. It has two streams:

  • Post-Vocational Education Work stream

    This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs.

  • Post-Higher Education Work stream

    This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution.

187 Visa – Regional Sponsorship Migration Scheme (Permanent Visa)

This permanent visa is for skilled workers who wish to work in regional Australia. Applicants can apply through this stream.

  • Temporary Residence Transition Stream

    For subclass 457/482 TSS visa holders who have worked 2-3 years in the same role with the same employer, the employer must support the Permanent Residency nomination.

489 Visa – Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa

This visa is part of the General Skilled Migration program and includes the following pathways

  • Invited Pathway

    This invitation-only visa allows skilled workers to live and work permanently in a specific state. Candidates must submit an EOI via SkillSelect and score at least 65 points (or higher).

  • Extended Stay Pathway

    This pathway is for holders of subclass 475, 487, 495, or 496 visas who have complied with all visa conditions for at least two years.

  • Subsequent Entry Pathway

    This visa is for family members of individuals holding a Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) or subclasses 475, 487, 495, or 496 visas.

489 Visa – Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa

This visa is for candidates who have lived and worked in specified areas of regional Australia on a previous eligible visa. Applicants must have held an eligible visa for a total of at least two years before applying for the Skilled Regional (subclass 887) visa.
 
Eligible visas include subclasses 489, 495, 496, 475, or 487, or a Bridging Visa A or Bridging Visa B, following a valid application for a subclass 489, 495, or 487 visa.

Apply for Australian Employer Sponsored Visas

The Australian Migration Program offers various employer-sponsored visa options that allow Australian employers to access skilled workers from overseas when local talent is unavailable or to train overseas candidates as needed.

These visas are complex and come with strict criteria.

482 Visa – Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS Visa)

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482), introduced in March 2018, replaced the 457 visa. It allows skilled workers to work in Australia for an approved sponsor in their nominated occupation under three streams.

  • Short-term (ST) Stream

    Skilled workers on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) can find temporary work opportunities in Australia.

  • Medium-term (MT) Stream

    Sponsorship for up to four years is available for occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).

  • Labour Agreement (LA) Stream

    For individuals sponsored by an employer with an established labor agreement, approved by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, for skilled positions.

407 Visa – Training Visa (Temporary Visa)

This visa allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills for your job’. The three streams ‘skills enhancement etc’ are correct for the 407 Training visa.

  • Skill Enhancement Training

    To improve skills in an eligible occupation.

  • Registration Training

    Required for obtaining
    registration.

  • Capacity Building Overseas

    Includes training for overseas qualifications, government support, or professional development.

186 Visa – Employer Nomination Scheme (Permanent Visa)

The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) allows Australian employers to fill skilled roles with migrants when local talent is unavailable. This visa offers permanent residency through three streams.

  • Temporary Residence Transition Stream

    TSS visa holders who have worked 2-3 years in the same occupation with the same employer can apply for permanent residency with employer support.

  • Direct Entry Stream

    Sponsorship for up to four years is available for occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).

  • Agreement Stream

    Employer-nominated individuals without prior Australian work experience or temporary residents not qualifying for the Temporary Residence Transition stream need a positive skills assessment.
